Automatic Alt Text for WordPress: Meet the Accessibility Law with Just One Click

Introduction

Web accessibility is no longer a “nice-to-have” but a legal obligation. Under the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG, German Accessibility Strengthening Act), many companies must ensure that their websites are also accessible to people with disabilities. A key part of that: alt text for images. These texts not only serve search engine optimization but are above all essential for screen readers. But anyone who has ever tried to add alt text to thousands of images by hand knows how time-consuming that is.

This is where our new WordPress plugin from realmaker.de comes in: it automatically generates high-quality, AI-based alt text for your images – fully automatic and legally compliant.

Why alt text matters (and is legally required)

Accessibility and the legal situation

Since 2025, the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) has applied in full to many companies. This means websites must be designed to be accessible, which also includes the semantic markup of images. Alt text is mandatory, especially for:

• Public institutions
• Online shops
• Companies above a certain size

SEO and user experience

Besides the legal obligation, alt text also improves your website’s SEO, since search engines can’t “see” images. And with a slow internet connection or broken images, alt text ensures a better user experience.

Our plugin: the solution for automatic alt text in WordPress

Simple to use, strong impact

Our WordPress plugin takes the work off your hands. It uses OpenAI image analysis to automatically generate accurate, accessible alt text. The AI recognizes the image content, analyzes it and returns a suitable alt text within seconds.

Three ways to use it

1. Manually via the media library: Simply select an image and generate alt text with one click.
2. Batch processing: Have all images without alt text processed automatically in one go.
3. Automatically on upload: The alt text is created automatically the moment an image is uploaded.

Alt text maintenance has never been this easy!

GDPR and transparency: how does the analysis work?

The image data is temporarily transmitted to OpenAI and analyzed there. The generated alt text is then inserted into WordPress immediately. The analysis is purely automated and no personal data is stored. In the plugin settings you can transparently see which data was processed and when.

Your business matters: contextual alt text

A real unique selling point of our plugin: you can specify what your company does (e.g. “photo studio from Berlin, specializing in portrait photography”). This information feeds into the AI’s assessment and results in even more accurate, context-aware alt text. Example: an image of a person in front of a camera becomes not just “person with camera” but “portrait photographer at work in the studio.”

Pricing: fair and scalable

We offer our plugin as an annual license with tiered volume packages:

Net, that is €41.18, €83.19 and €251.26 per year plus VAT. One image yields one alt text, and the allowance applies per month. No hidden costs, full control over your alt text inventory.

Billed annually, prices according to img2text.net, as of October 2026.
